Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in Women

Recovering from problems with alcohol

This program by the National Institutes of Health features narratives of seven women recovering from problems with alcohol.

These stories make it clear that it's possible to miss danger signs and that social drinking can become problem drinking, which in turn can evolve into addiction.

Abuse and alcoholism are often perceived as problems that only affect men, but alcoholism has been on the rise among women for the last 30 years.

Gender and Cardiovascular Disease

Men and Women Present Differently

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women--it's an even greater factor than cancer. One out of two women will die from heart disease.

Cate Collings, M.D. discusses the unique symptoms of heart disease in women at the 2012 El Camino Hospital Heart Forum, including the fact that women are less likely to have a "Hollywood" heart attack, that they have atypical chest main symptoms, that they report a larger variety of symptoms, that they often worry about inconveniencing others when considering whether to call for help, and as a result, they often delay getting medical attention.

Factoring In Gender: Women's Health Research at Yale

Scientists and community members speak about a variety of topics including:

1) the dramatic need for scientific information on women's health and on gender-specific factors determining health and disease;

2) the scientific tradition of excluding women as participants in many clinical trials, and the continuing practice of "pooling" subject data rather than analyzing health outcomes by gender that have each contributed to this "knowledge gap,";

3) the progress being made in reversing these historical trends, and;

4) new scientific information being uncovered in women's health and gender-specific medicine.
