The American Academy of Ophthalmology

The American Academy of Ophthalmology is the largest national membership association of Eye M.D.s.

 

Eye M.D.s are ophthalmologists, medical and osteopathic doctors who provide comprehensive eye care, including medical, surgical and optical care. More than 90 percent of practicing U.S. Eye M.D.s are Academy members, and the Academy has more than 7,000 international members.

The Academy's Mission

The mission of the American Academy of Ophthalmology is to advance the lifelong learning and professional interests of ophthalmologists (Eye M.D.s) to ensure that the public can obtain the best possible eye care.

The American Academy of Neurology

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN), established in 1948, is an international professional association of 24,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals dedicated to promoting the highest quality patient-centered neurologic care.

 

The AAN is strongly committed to its mission and focuses its efforts on ensuring the reality of the principles and standards set forth in the AAN mission statement.

The American Academy of Insurance Medicine

The American Academy of Insurance Medicine (AAIM) is among the oldest medical specialty organizations in the United States.

 

Our physician members typically serve as medical directors to insurance companies. Members may serve these companies as advisors for underwriting and consultants for claims and disability management. Other roles include medical and actuarial research, underwriting guideline development, employee health education and care, and as professional liaison to the medical community, legislative bodies and regulatory agencies.

History of the American Academy of Insurance Medicine

In 1889, 34 physicians from 27 insurance companies formed the Association of Life Insurance Medical Directors of America (ALIMDA) in New York. By 1990 there were 606 medical director members from 363 insurance companies. Originally it was an organization for medical directors in the United States and Canada, but members from other countries were welcomed as the 20th century progressed.

The American Academy of Family Physicians is the national association of family doctors. It is one of the largest national medical organizations, with more than 100,300 members in 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. Until October 3, 1971, it was known as the American Academy of General Practice. The name was changed in order to reflect more accurately the changing nature of primary health care.

The Academy was founded in 1947 to promote and maintain high quality standards for family doctors who are providing continuing comprehensive health care to the public. Other major purposes of the Academy include:
